Identify Your Cummins® Engine
Discover the serial number of your Cummins® engine with this user-friendly guide.
Cummins® engines are found in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. Familiarizing yourself with your Cummins® Engine Serial Number (ESN) can save you a lot of time when ordering parts for your engine. Owner’s manuals often go astray, so KMP have compiled a helpful guide that simplifies the process of locating and deciphering Cummins® engine data plates and on-block serial numbers. Cummins® engine serial numbers have a more traditional serial number format compared to Caterpillar® ESNs. Cummins® ESNs traditionally consist of eight numeric digits. Some earlier models may have serial numbers as short as 6 digits. These serial numbers follow a numerical sequence based on the order in which the engines were produced on the assembly line. There is no specific designation for different engine models. In addition to serial numbers, Cummins® engines feature something slightly unique called a CPL, which stands for Critical Parts List or Control Parts List. The CPL is a list of basic engine parts and timing specifications. Unlike ESNs, there are fewer CPLs since multiple engines can have the same CPL. Some basic engine parts can be ordered by CPL if the ESN is unavailable.Cummins® Engine Data Plate Location
To locate the engine serial number of a Cummins® engine, you can refer to the data plate affixed to the engine. The data plate is a valuable resource as it often provides additional information like the CPL, horsepower, and RPM rating. However, locating the data plate can be challenging as its position varies depending on the engine model. To find the specific location of the data plate for your engine, consult your owner’s manual. If you no longer have the manual please see below table indicating the data plate locations for some of the more popular Cummins® engine models.Cummins® Engine Serial Number Location
Cummins® Engine Serial Numbers (ESNs) traditionally consist of eight digits without any accompanying letters. They are arranged in sequential order, reflecting the assembly sequence of the engines.Cummins® Critical Parts List (CPL)
In case you are unable to find the ESN, you can refer to the Critical Parts List (CPL), which is specific to Cummins® engines. The CPL is a compilation of basic engine components. While different engines may share the same CPL, there are fewer CPLs compared to ESNs. The CPL is a 4 digit number that identifies the basic components and timing specifications approved for the engine and the maximum power rating.WHERE TO FIND YOUR CUMMINS® SERIAL NUMBER
